Mountain Man named Scott Grizzly Sorenson came to Art City Elementary fourth-grade students to talk about "Mountain Men and the History of the Fur Trade" a little about what it means to be a "Mountain Man" in the twenty-first century. He grew up in the Wasatch Mountains, but lives in Canada in the summers on Kipawa River. He learned about mountain men when he was in fourth-grade and decided he wanted to become one. We learn about mountain men as part of our social studies core.

Before Thanksgiving Art City Elementary first-grade classes performed for the school then for their parents. Thanksgiving was the theme; from "A to Z" they gave reasons to be thankful and had songs to go along with the theme.  One of my favorites is "Gobble, Gobble, Strut".  Students also had the opportunity to "dress-up" a turkey, which were on display in the Gym.

Each year, just before Thanksgiving, the Kindergarten, at Art City Elementary school, in Springville, dress as Pilgrims one day and Indians the next day, in remembrance of the first Thanksgiving.  The students had opportunities to be a pilgrim and make butter for bread, washed clothes on a wash board, sewed on a button to make a pocket and played old fashioned games, the next day they were Indians they popped popcorn, ground corn, made a pot with clay, read stories in a teepee, made “beaded” necklaces using pasta, banged on drums and danced around the teepee.&

Veterans Day at Art City started with a flag ceremony from one of our local Cub Scout Pack's; we then had the opportunity to hear from an artist and illustrator, Julie Olsen.  Students were invited to write "What it means to be a Veteran" and the top students from each grade were honored at the Veterans' Day assembly.  During the assembly Julie Olsen shared with us one of her books that honors, not only Veterans but the United States of America.  The book she shared was "Discover America".

These Student Council members took a day to charge up their powers and and learn how to dedicate their time to serve.  With their Principal, Mrs. Nielsen and the Counselor Mrs. Kober, to light the way, they converged on BYU for an inspiring day on leadership.  They returned to Art City Elementary on a quest to show the student body how to unite so all students learn to serve and be kind to others.
