How I Became a Pirate

The 2nd grade had an opportunity to go to the Scera Shell theatre to see a children's play of "How I Became a Pirate."  The teachers wanted to provide the students an opportunity to see a live musical production.  After the show the entire second grade had the chance to go on stage, meet the cast and take pictures with them.  Several members of the cast have performed with Miss Shoni Winkel and were more than happy to stay and give their time to the students.  The Second grade had read the book “How I Became a Pirate” by Melinda Long and illustrated by David Shannon,  before they went to see the play.  A synopsis of the story as quoted from Amazon:  “When Braid Beard's pirate crew invites Jeremy Jacob to join their voyage, he jumps right on board. Buried treasure, sea chanteys, pirate talk--who wouldn't go along? Soon Jeremy Jacob knows all about being a pirate. He throws his food across the table and his manners to the wind. He hollers like thunder and laughs off bedtime. It's the heave-ho, blow-the-man-down, very best time of his life. Until he finds out what pirates don't do--no reading bedtime stories, no tucking kids in. . . . Maybe being a pirate isn't so great after all.”  The students had a good time comparing what was the same and different in the book from the play.  Since the play they have also read the second book “Pirates Don’t Change Diapers”.
