“Beauty is . . .” 89 Students from Art City Elementary submitting 102 entries for Reflections 2009. The School celebrated these students by watching a power point of the participants and their entries at an assembly, Friday, October 6th, 2009.

Stacey Hatch, the PTA committee chair person who collected and took pictures of all the entries, was really impressed with the time the students put into their entries, to notice and ponder “what beauty meant to them”.

Stacey invited local artisans (which remain confidential) to judge the various categories including the following: Photography, Visual Arts, Literacy, 3-D (sculpture), Music composition, and Dance.

Art City Elementary will have 22 entries go on to the Council level. After competing on the council level they may go onto Region, State, then National levels. Good luck students!

Fire Safety with Richard Beach

Fire Safety 10-09-09 0014.JPG

Safety always:  Richard Beach, from the Springville Fire Department, came to Art City Elementary school, Friday, October 9, 2009, to remind everyone how to stay safe.  Some of the points he taught:  Never leave a candle burning if leaving the room, blow it out before you go; be careful around the stove, don’t wear loose clothes while cooking, turn the pot handles in so no one pulls it over or bumps into it, use pot holders or hot pads, and if a fire starts in the pan use a hot pad, get a lid, and place it on top of the pan to smother the flames;  there always needs to be a three foot clearance when using a space heater; and if anyone finds matches or a lighter you need to run and tell your mom or dad to put them away.
Mr. Beach had a contest between the student council and half the teachers to see who was listening and who knew how to stay safe.  The competition was close but over all the student council was the quickest to ring the bell.

Can you spot which one is not a kindergartener?  Art City kindergarten classes had a spook-tacular time, Thursday, October 8, 2009, at Pumpkin land in Orem.  The children explored the corn maze, visited the ghosts and goblins in the friendly spook alley, and finished their excursion by bringing home a pumpkin of their own to decorate

Old McDonald had a farm e I e I e I o and on this farm we all said “Hee Haw”. The first grade from Art City Elementary School went to Hee Haw farms in Pleasant Grove on Tuesday, September 29th to see how plants grow. They looked at the parts of plants as they navigated a corn maze, walked past the giant sunflowers and picked a pumpkin. They also saw animals, jumped on the hay jump, went on a hay ride, played in the corn box and enjoyed a picnic.
Everyone came back dusty, thirsty and exhausted but all seemed to have a good time. We want to thank Hee Haw farms for letting us come and all the parents who helped.

Kick off for Read for Success with Magic Mike

Magic Mike came to Art City Thursday, September 3rd, to kick-off Ken Garff's Road to Success Reading program. It's a good thing Mrs. Wheatley, a 1st grade teacher, could read because she was placed in the "time-out" box.  Magic Mike reviewed the instructions with her, then said to read number four to herself because that was the secret to being safe in the box.

After placing Mrs. Wheatley into time-out Magic Mike slid metal dividers into the box then proceeded to slide long swords into the box. When finished he opened the box and Mrs. Wheatley was not to be seen, only the swords.  He closed the box and pulled all swords and dividers out and opened the box back up and there she was.  WOW!

If Mrs. Wheatley couldn't read she would not have been able to stay safe as the swords were thrust into the box.

Aaaah, fresh air! The fifth grade classes from Art City Elementary went to Shadow Mtn. on Thursday, September 18th. They were involved in several challenging leadership and team building exercises and enjoyed being in the mountain air.

Shadow Mountain is a camp 5th grade students in the Nebo School District have the opportunity to attend during the summer. Today they were able see what it is like. Being with friends and learning to get along all while being in the mountains was an adventure these 5th grade students will never forget.
